The Chimney Sweeping Process
Sweeping is carried out using a rotary sweeping system and vacuum or a traditional manual brush depending on the chimney. The area in front of the fireplace is covered with sheeting and the fireplace sealed. The vacuum then cleans up the soot ensuring nothing comes into the room and that the job is clean and leaves no health risks to you or your family lingering in the house.
Following the sweeping process a smoke test is carried out to ensure that the chimney is drawing/working properly. A certificate is then issued which satisfies your home insurance compliance.
Ensuring Your Chimney is Clean and Safe
For wood burners; multi fuel or biomass stoves that have a liner system, the use of special flexible rods and brushes are used. This prevents damage to the liner and allows for the sweeping of the flue through the stove which means that everything is carried out at ground level.
Benefits of Chimney Sweeping:
A regularly swept flue / chimney prevents the risk of chimney fires, complies with home insurance conditions and if a rental or holiday let premises complies with legislation. It improves the efficiency of your fire and prevents smoke problems.
It is also particularly important if a liner system is installed as it increases the lifespan of the liner by reducing soot, tar and creosote build up.
How Often Should I Have My Chimney Swept?
In order to reduce the build up of soot, tar and creosote or bitumen, it is important to burn the correct fuel and have your chimney swept on a regular basis as advised by your Chimney Sweep. For wood-burning and multi fuel stoves, it is recommended that they are swept twice a year or quarterly.
It is recommended by HETAS and the Solid Fuel Association that chimneys are swept at least once a year for Coal, Gas and Oil appliances.
